Intensed Pulsed Light (IPL) Photofacials in New York City
What is a photo facial?
IPL is a non-laser, intense light source that is commonly referred to as a photofacial. It is one of the most noninvasive, easy and effective ways for a more clear and vibrant look.
During this procedure, a broad-spectrum light source (500-1200 nm) is administered to problem skin areas and targets either hemoglobin, the red protein in blood vessels, or melanin, the darkish pigment that builds up in freckles, sun spots and age spots. Both hemoglobin and melanin are chromophores, which means that they readily absorb light energy. The light pulses are generated on the surface of the skin through bursts of electrical currents.
IPL is a form of selective photothermolysis which means that the applied light energy is confined to the targeted skin areas. Therefore, the thermal energy released will not affect surrounding, healthy skin cells and only act on the skin’s problem areas. This approach reduces potential skin cell damage and is highly effective at reducing the appearance of broken capillaries, age spots, vascular lesions, sun spots, and hyperpigmentation. IPL is an easy and efficient way to target those imperfections.
Heat from the IPL device will also raise the temperature of blood vessels, causing them to coagulate, shrink, and be replaced by fibrous tissue. This will indirectly boost the production of collagen, a vital structural protein that maintains the skin’s shape and plays an important role in tissue repair.
Over three-five treatments, IPL will cause broken capillaries to collapse, and it will break down melanin so that age spots and freckles fade. Darker spots, or skin conditions that are rooted deeper in the dermis, usually will require more frequent and intense treatments. Though you may start to see great results after one treatment, on average it will take three-five treatments for more significant and dramatic improvements.
Conditions it Treats:
Age spots, sun damage, large pores, acne, acne scars, broken capillaries (telangiectasias), varicose veins, poikiloderma of civatte, vascular lesions, rosacea, sun spots and uneven pigmentation (dyschromia). IPL is safe and effective for all skin colors. While it can cause Hyperpigmentation in pigmented skin, any IPL device can be calibrated to minimize such an effect.
What to Expect:
Your designated Licensed Skin Care Expert will discuss your skin care needs and expectations with you. We will also ask about your medical history, any medications you may be taking, learn about your lifestyle and conduct a complete examination of your skin condition. During this time, feel free to ask any questions and express your concerns. Our number one goal is to make sure you are totally comfortable with the procedure; you will know exactly what to expect, both during and after the procedure.
At the start of this treatment, you will be given protective glasses to wear. A soothing, cooling gel will then be applied to the area of skin being treated. Next, a trained medical professional will use a small device to administer pulses of light to the targeted skin area. You may see flashes of light while this is occurring, and while it alarms some patients, it is completely harmless. The number of light pulses needed depends on the nature of the skin condition. Your designated skincare professional will be able to customize pulse duration and pulse sequences for your specific skin problem.
Pain is usually minimal, if at all, and the sensation is often described as a rubber band snapping against the skin. If you ever become too uncomfortable with the procedure, we can stop at any time.
The IPL procedure can take anywhere between 30-90 minutes. Afterwards, slight redness or swelling may occur. Bruising is a possible but uncommon side effect. The risk of bruising increases when larger blood vessels are treated. Freckles and Age spots may appear darker for 3-7 days, but this resolves over a month’s time. If you experience any other issues after your treatment, call our office right away.
Makeup can be applied the same day as your treatment, and sunscreen is highly advised since too much sun exposure can negatively affect the results. It is also advised that you avoid using heat for 24 hours on the treated skin area and wash with chilled water only. We also recommend that you avoid rigorous workouts for at least 2 days. Too rigorous a workout can cause the treated broken capillaries to reopen and minimize the effectiveness of the treatment.
Though you can witness significant improvements after one treatment, usually 3-5 treatments, spaced one month apart, are needed for the skin condition to resolve or be reduced.
The IPL treatment is very popular due to its noninvasive nature, minimal recovery time, little to no pain and, most importantly, its radiant results. It is a very affordable option which also makes it one of our more attractive ones. Directly following the treatment, you can immediately return to your daily routine as it requires very little recovery time. While the number of treatment sessions needed varies from person to person, it is usually after 3-5 sessions that brown spots fade or disappear, broken capillaries shrink or disappear, pores shrink, and uneven pigmentation is reduced. IPL is one of the most cost-effective skin-enhancing options available.
