Dermabrasion and microdermabrasion are two skincare treatments that effectively remove the older outer layer of skin in order to allow for new and healthier skin to form in its place. Dermabrasion and microdermabrasion are strong exfoliation techniques that can remove or diminish many defects in the outer skin layer. The result is fewer blemishes, fewer pock marks or acne scars, fewer age spots, and less evidence of sun damage.
While you will need to schedule a bit of recovery time for a dermabrasion procedure, the results are well worth it. Most of our patients are highly satisfied with the rejuvenating effects and cosmetic improvements fromdermabrasion. If you are considering a highly effective and nonsurgical way to diminish those frustrating marks and blemishes on your skin, dermabrasion may be perfect for you. Also, if you want a less aggressive approach or can’t commit to a lengthy recovery time, a microdermabrasion is also an option. Rejuve NYC offers both the dermabrasion and microdermabrasion procedure at our Upper East Side location.
Who is a good candidate?
Men and women looking for a stronger exfoliation method and a way to naturally boost collagen production. Dermabrasion is a tool for addressing fine lines, pock marks, age spots, dry skin and more. Dermabrasion works best on fair skin, but microdermabrasion works well on all skin types and colors. There are no known contraindications, but if you have any questions or concerns, call and speak with one of our New York City skin rejuvenation experts.
What to Expect:
At Rejuve Clinic, we begin every treatment with a consultation where we get to know you and your cosmetic expectations. We take a complete medical history which assists in determining the best treatment option. We will ask about any medical illnesses, previous skin treatments, medications, vitamins and allergies.
A physical examination of the area to be treated will be conducted next by a board certified doctor. Crucial for making sure a proper diagnosis is made, an exam also helps the medical staff to understand the cosmetic condition. With the diagnosis in hand, the treatment team will make a recommendation. During this consultation, you are encouraged to ask any questions you may have and express your concerns.
After the initial discussion, you will lay down on an examination table. For a dermabrasion treatment, one of our expert skincare experts will thoroughly clean the area to be treated and inject a numbing medication for pain. It will take approximately twenty to thirty minutes for the numbing medication to start working. Next, the skincare specialist will use an instrument that has a fast spinning wheel on the skin. This instrument essentially “sands down” the skin, efficiently and rapidly removing the outer layer of skin. The numbing medication should be effective enough that you do not feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure.
Microdermabrasion is less invasive than dermabrasion. You will not need numbing medication for microdermabrasion. Instead, tiny crystals are sprayed on the skin. The skincare specialist will rub them around in a circular motion which allows the skin to exfoliate. This is a very gentle and painless procedure.
The dermabrasion procedure requires much more recovery time and aftercare than the microdermabrasion. After dermabrasion, your skin will feel like it has been badly sun-burned or wind-burned. Your skin will be pink and sensitive for the first few days, and may continue to flake off. In seven to ten days, the skin should be mostly healed, and the pink color should normalize over the next few months. The doctor may prescribe pain medication to help control any feelings of discomfort. It is highly advised that you wear sunscreen following the treatment, as sun exposure can further damage the skin. Wearing sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat is also highly recommended. We also recommend that you refrain from wearing makeup for at least seven days
The microdermabrasion requires much less downtime. The skin may feel slightly burnt for up to twenty-four hours following the procedure. The skin may appear pink and flake off. Usually, you can start wearing makeup again in one day. Sunscreen is also advised, as it is for all skin procedures.
What are the Risks?
The chance of side effects is a lot higher with dermabrasion than microdermabrasion. The side effects include: uneven changes in skin color (hyper or hypopigmentation); scar formation; infection; bruising; bleeding. For microdermabrasion, you may experience irritation from crystals that get into unprotected eyes. To minimize risks, follow all aftercare instructions from your Dr. Gafanovich – NYC medical skincare expert. It is also advised that you avoid alcohol consumption, aspirin and blood-thinning medication. Be sure to make all follow-up appointments, so our staff can ensure that your skin is healing properly.
What are the Benefits?
The dermabrasion and microdermabrasion procedures can effectively remove the blemished, scarred and spotted outer layer of the skin, allowing for new and much healthier skin growth. The end result is that your skin will have a more rejuvenated glow, less visible blemishes, less lines, diminished scars and just an overall clearer and more compelling look.
