Opening Your Pores with a Facial Steam

Add steaming to your beauty schedule.

Steam your way to cleaner, healthier skin

Steam cleaning does wonders for your rugs, and the same concept can be used to clean your pores and give you a healthy, blemish-free complexion. Here’s how to harness the power of water and heat to achieve more beautiful skin.

Discover the beauty benefits of steam. There’s more than one way to deep clean your pores, but steaming is perhaps one of the simplest and most effective. The heat of the steam increases circulation to your skin, which helps bring nourishment to the outer layers of your face; it also increases the production of sweat, helping your body clear impurities and oils out of your pores. And just as steam does wonders for cleaning surfaces in your home, the steam can help dislodge built-up dirt and grime in your pores, allowing you to simply rinse them away.

Give steam facials a try. You can buy a specialized machine that’s made just for steam facials, but a simple bowl and towel will do the trick. To properly steam your pores, start by washing your face with a gentle cleanser to remove any surface dirt. Next, boil the water for your steam facial, and pour it into a bowl. Hold your head about 12 inches from the bowl, and place a towel over your head to help trap in the steam and let it work its magic on your pores. If you start to feel too hot, move your face farther away from the bowl, or wait a few minutes for the water to lose some of its heat. You should steam your pores for about five minutes to allow the heat and moisture to really do their job. When you’re done, rinse your skin with warm water, then swipe a cotton ball soaked with toner across your face (apple-cider vinegar works great as an all-natural toner). Follow up your steam treatment by massaging a light lotion onto your skin to help seal in the moisture.

Kick it up a notch. While plain old hot water can give you a great steam, adding in herbs or aromatherapy oils will make the steaming more enjoyable and can benefit your skin. Many beauty experts recommend using green tea, lavender, or peppermint tea bags to improve your skin — and give your mood a boost as well.

Add steaming to your beauty schedule. To achieve the full benefit of steam facials, you should add it to your weekly beauty repertoire. By doing these regularly, you’ll avoid a buildup of oils and dirt in your pores that could lead to acne and other blemishes.
