My Daily Detox Drink

My Daily Detox Drink: Apple Cider Vinegar, Lemon, and Water

I, like so many of you, have decided to live a healthier life in 2013. And while I’m hesitant to give up my cookie-addiction cold turkey (I mean, I’m not crazy), I have been trying to incorporate easy healthy tweaks to my routine.

Enter my new morning beverage: Hot water boosted with apple cider vinegar.

Before you give me the stink-eye, hear me out. When mixed with hot water, lemon juice (hello vitamin C), ginger (an anti-inflammatory), and a splash of agave, it serves as a jump-start to the detox process in my body. While the apple cider vinegar promotes digestion, the lemon juice helps my liver function (a must since I do love me a martini). The ingredients are also a favorite of celeb nutritionist Kimberly Snyder aka She-who-Created-the-Tasty-and-Healthy-Glowing-Green-Smoothie.

I first heard about drinking hot water (yes, just plain ole hot water) from Daily Glow photo editor Rebecca Starr, who saidshe read that Maria Menounos drank hot water all day to help boost metabolism and keep her hydrated. While I’m dubious that drinking hot water can help my body burn more calories, I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt. After all,Maria Menounos has a sick body.

Anyway, I digress.

I’ve been drinking my morning detox (or, if I’m running late, I sip Switchel, a pre-made concoction that tastes just as good cold as it does hot) every day for the last week and so far so good. Whereas before I’d need a shot of Nespresso to wake me out of my post-dream daze, now I’m a fully functional human being before I even leave the house.

Now if that’s not fulfilling a new year’s resolution, I’m not sure what is.

Sharon’s Healthy Morning Pick-Me-Up

8 to 12 ounces hot water

2 to 3 teaspoons apple cider vinegar (I use Bragg’s)

1 teaspoon agave nectar or maple syrup

½ lemon, sliced or squeezed

Fresh grated ginger, to taste (optional)

Dash of cinnamon (optional)

Mix all ingredients in a mug and let steep for a few minutes. Drink and get ready to feel refreshed.
