Feed Your Face: Apples for Your Skin, and a Fall Apple Recipe
Try this tasty baked apple recipe — and find out how apples can benefit your skin.
Apples are high in malic acid, a type of alpha hydroxy acid that’s been shown to help reduce discoloration of the skin. In fact, it’s one of the ingredients (along with mandelic acid) in M2 HP Skin Refinish lotion (mamalotion.com). This lotion has helped some of my patients who have dark spots, scars, and blotchy skin but who are not able to tolerate retinoids or prescription skin lighteners.
Of course, apples are also delicious, and I look forward to fall apples every year. Just remember that they’re high in fructose (fruit sugar) and that swings in blood sugar can aggravate acne, wrinkles, and rashes — so be sure to have some protein along with your apples. Try this recipe for baked apples; you can combine them with nonfat Greek yogurt for breakfast, serve them with eggs for brunch, or put them on the table as a side dish with pork chops or roast turkey:
4 apples (Granny Smith or Rome Beauty)
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 cup coarsely chopped dried unsweetened cherries
1/4 cup chopped walnuts or almonds
1 tbsp unsalted butter (optional)
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
and nuts in a bowl and set aside. Peel and core apples, being careful not to cut all the way through the apples to the bottom. Sprinkle apples with cinnamon mixture and dot with butter, if desired. Place in a glass baking dish. Add enough water to cover the bottoms of the apples. Cover with aluminum foil and bake about 45 minutes or until apples are soft. Remove from oven and serve warm. Enjoy!
