I love natural products + I have very dry skin. I have yet to find a great facial lotion that can keep me from being flakey. Seriously it’s so bad. I have been looking for a homemade lotion recipe but came across SO many that took way too much time or had ingredients I didn’t feel like finding. Finally came across this one from Frugal by Choice.
Here’s how I did mine:
1/5 of a 1lb bar of beeswax
1/2 cup almond oil
1/2 cup coconut oil
Note: I have no idea how to measure out “1 part” of beeswax so I eyed about a 1/5 of a bar, cut it off (which is not easy to do) melted it down in a double broiler (in a bowl on top of a saucepan of boiling water) poured the melted beeswax into a measuring cup and it came out to EXACTLY 1/2 cup.
Melt the beeswax down in a double broiler (described above). Add in the coconut oil and stir until that is melted. Add in the almond oil and stir until combined. Wipe off the bottom of your bowl (so no water drips) and pour into a cupcake pan. I just used a regular metal one.
Let sit overnight and twist your pan like an ice cube tray and they should pop right out! You can warm the bottom up a bit if they aren’t coming out but try twisting and patting the bottom first. That’s it! SO easy.
A couple notes – beeswax hardens VERY quickly, the silicone trays work too, this made about 5 cupcakes worth, I use organic ingredients when possible.
To use: rub a bar between your hands to warm it up a bit and use where needed. I rub it into my hands and use it on my face, arms, legs etc. It’s great for eczema patches, dry skin like knees and elbows, or anywhere you have dry skin. You can use it as a lip moisturizer too!
I just keep mine on the counter in a soap dish and the extras in the fridge. I wrap them in parchment or wax paper and stick them all together in a container. You won’t want to leave this in the hot car or it will melt everywhere unless you have it in a waterproof container. It can be melted down and re-hardened whenever you want.
These lotion bars have a very light coconut/honey smell but you can also add a few drops of your favorite essential oil if you want.
I’d like to try this with cocoa butter soon, but for now I’m hooked!
