How to Get Rid of Hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition we see at Rejuve NYC. It can take a lot of time and frustration to apply makeup and attempt to make darkened areas of skin blend in with one’s normal skin tone. While there are medications and over-the-counter creams for lightening dark spots on the skin, these methods can take a lot of time and effort.
What Causes Hyperpigmentation of the Skin?
Hyperpigmentation occurs when patches of skin become darker than one’s normal skin tone. It is usually a harmless condition, and most people come to our Manhattan clinic for cosmetic reasons. Hyperpigmentation is due to the overproduction of melanin, a dark brown pigment, which is secreted by melanocytes, cells located in the bottom layer of the epidermis. Melanin is the pigment responsible for variations in normal skin tone, however when produced in excess, it often leads to uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation.
Melanin is a very good absorber of sunlight, and sunlight will darken already existing hyperpigmentation on the skin. In fact, the ability of melanin to absorb the sun’s rays helps prevent UV radiation from passing into the dermis, or inner layer of the skin, and damaging cellular DNA. Therefore, though unsightly, dark spots actually help protect us from radiation damage.
UV radiation from the sun also stimulates melanogenesis or the production of melanin. This means that increased sun exposure heightens the risk of hyperpigmentation. The best preventive measure against hyperpigmentation is wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen and avoiding overexposure to the sun, as well as tanning.
Hyperpigmentation can affect all skin colors. Sun spots, freckles and age spots are common examples of hyperpigmentation, and often found on parts of the body that receive a lot of sun exposure.
The production of melanin is also affected by hormone levels. Any natural fluctuation in hormone levels, such as during pregnancy or when taking birth control pills or hormone replacement drugs, can lead to a specific kind of hyperpigmentation called Melasma. Melasma spots are dark, well-defined brown areas that often appear on the cheeks, nose, lips or forehead of women. It is often called the “Mask of pregnancy,” as it is commonly seen on pregnant women’s faces. Melanin production is also affected by levels of a hormone called Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH), which is secreted by the anterior pituitary gland. When ACTH is increased, such as in diseases like Cushings, hyperpigmentation can occur on the skin.
Some people use skin-lightening creams that contain hydroquinone, a topical bleach, to lighten existing dark spots and slow the production of melanin. You can get a prescription for Hydroquinone from your New York cosmetic doctor or use over-the-counter bleaching creams. However, they often are nowhere near as effective. Also, if you are prone to allergies, always discuss with your physician before using a topical bleach cream, as they can trigger allergic reactions.

The IPL device is a gentle therapy that emits a range of light waves that target either hemoglobin in blood vessels or melanin, the pigment that builds up in hyperpigmentation.
