Enlarged Oil Glands
Enlarged Oil Glands (Sebaceous Glands) Treatment in New York City
Enlarged oil glands, also called sebaceous glands, are a common skin problem that affects one out of ten adults. Enlarged oil glands can occur at any age. However, they are more common in the forty to sixty-year-old age range. While a benign condition, enlarged sebaceous glands can create cosmetic problems for individuals. They can be hard to cover up with makeup and can create textural irregularities on the skin.
What are Enlarged Oil Glands?
Oil glands exist on the skin all over our bodies. The only body parts that do not have oil (sebaceous) glands are the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. Sebaceous glands secrete a substance called sebum, a substance that contains triglycerides, fat metabolites and wax. The normal function of sebum is to lubricate the skin and to waterproof it. Sebaceous glands exist in the largest numbers on the face, chest, back and upper arms.
Sebaceous glands are heavily controlled by androgens, which are steroid hormones. Androgens influence how large sebaceous glands become and how active they are. For instance, when individuals reach puberty, androgens increase and also cause an enlargement of sebaceous glands and an increase in secretion activity. This hormone-driven phenomenon contributes to acne flare-ups at puberty. When the amount of androgen starts to decrease as we age, there is decreased cell-turnover of sebaceous cells. This means that old sebaceous cells become crowded with new sebaceous cells and cause the overall gland to enlarge. This is called sebaceous hyperplasia. The sebaceous glands typically enlarge up to ten times their normal size.
While androgens play a key role in the formation of enlarged oil glands, humid weather, warmer temperatures, and genetics can also be key influencers. Skin hygiene and how an individual cleans his or her skin also plays a role. Frequent exfoliation sessions seem to reduce the risk of enlarged oil glands, possibly by clearing away some of the dead skin cells and bacteria.
When the sebaceous glands enlarge ( sebaceous hyperplasia), yellowish, white or skin-colored bumps can appear on the skin. The bumps indent in their centers, giving them a crater-like appearance. These bumps are often painless but can become irritated by touching, shaving or friction. Collectively, they sometimes look like cauliflowers.
Many individuals choose to take prescription medication or have enlarged oil glands treated surgically. However, if you prefer a much less invasive and effective treatment, Rejuve Clinic offers both intense pulsed light (IPL) and laser resurfacing technologies. Most of these treatments are not painful, require little recovery time and yield significant improvements.
Rejuve NYC Clinic’s Treatment Options for Enlarged Oil Glands
When you arrive at the clinic for your appointment, the medical doctor will discuss with you your cosmetic issues and expectations. A thorough medical history will be taken, which includes medications you have/are taking, previous skin therapies you have tried, medical conditions, allergies and family history. The doctor will then do a physical exam of the area of skin to be treated, in order to assess which therapy is most ideal. At this time, it is important that you ask any questions you may have and express all concerns. Our highly-qualified medical staff will make sure you understand your condition and treatment options. While our goal is always a satisfying cosmetic outcome, making sure you are comfortable with your options is pertinent.
