Treating and Getting Rid of Bruises at New York Skin Rejuvenation Center of Rejuve NYC

All of us have had a bruise at some point in time, especially as we navigated through childhood. Bruises often look big, ugly, and are difficult to disguise with makeup, but often they resolve naturally, on their own, over time. Unfortunately, as we age, the risk of bruising increases as our skin becomes more fragile, our risk of falling increases and our ability to heal slows down.

Dr. Marina Gafanovich and her team of skin experts at Rejuve NYC understand the cosmetic issues bruising can create and offer a highly effective, state of the art treatment.Continue reading to find out more.

What causes bruising?

Below the epidermis, or outer layer of skin, is a very vascular-rich layer called the dermis. Under normal and healthy conditions, these delicate networks of blood vessels supply oxygen and nutrients to the skin cells, while carrying waste and toxins away. When the skin experiences a form of trauma, the blood vessels in the dermis can become injured, break and bleed. The resultant collection of blood beneath the skin forms a bruise, or what is medically known as a contusion.

BruisesA bruise is often tender and may appear black, blue or even multi-colored. It may appear an unsightly green about a week out from the initial trauma. Ice packs will help reduce stiffness, swelling and inflammation, especially if applied promptly. New york cosmetic experts suggest concealers with yellow tones to cover a bruise while its healing. Under normal conditions, it may take two-three weeks for a bruise to resolve, however, as we age, it tends to take longer. As we age, our body’s ability to heal slows down and our skin and blood vessels become more fragile and susceptible to even minor injuries. This may result in some unwanted, residual, cosmetic side effects, such as broken capillaries, uneven pigmentation, scarring, redness or blotchiness.

Treatment Options

Any kind of external trauma or blunt force can create bruising. Also, cosmetic surgeries and age-reducing procedures, such as BOTOX injections or skin filler injections (Restylane, Radiesse, Sculptra) can cause bruising. Before undergoing these treatments, and to reduce the amount of bruising, it is best to consult with your physician and stop any blood-thinning medication you might be taking, such as Coumadin, Heparin, Persantine and Aspirin.  It is also best to avoid exercising for a few days, allowing your body time to heal, and apply ice packs promptly.

Our Approach to Bruises:

We value each person that visits us at Rejuve Clinic and we realize that everyone is unique and comes with different needs and desires. When you first come to Rejuve Clinic, conveniently located on New York City’s Upper East Side, Dr. Marina Gafanovich and her team of skin experts will discuss your desires and concerns with you. A medical history and thorough physical skin exam will be conducted to ensure a proper medical diagnosis. Once we have a clear idea of what is needed, one of our staff will talk with you about your condition and explain to you the most effective treatment options. Be sure to express your concerns and ask any questions; our primary goal is to make sure you are fully informed and comfortable with your treatment choice.

Rejuve NYC Clinic’s Treatment Options for Bruises:

Bruises NYCThe VBeam is a pulsed dye laser and often nicknamed the “vascular laser,” because its main charge is to treat broken capillaries, or dilated blood vessels, redness and Rosacea. It can be a very effective treatment for the frustrating cosmetic side effects of bruising, which often include broken vessels, redness, blotchiness or scarring. On the targeted bruised area, the VBeam will work against hemoglobin, or red protein, in the broken capillaries, causing them to shrink and disappear. This will diminish the appearance of the red, spider-like veins and redness in the aftermath of bruising. Bruising, itself, can be a temporary side effect of the VBeam treatment, but this will resolve on its own.

Healthy Age Management:

We all age, and some of us age better than others. Rejuve Clinic wants to help you live the healthiest life possible as you age gracefully and maintain healthy skin plans. We offer consultations on healthy lifestyle tips, sun protection, diet and vitamin recommendations.

The best way to minimize bruising as we age is to prevent falling. If you have a history of falls and are a “Bad Bruiser,” keep track of the medications you take and discuss how you feel with your doctor. Some medications can cause light-headedness or dizziness and lead to falling. Be sure to get regular checkups with your doctor, as some medical conditions can result in falling.  If you persistently fall in the same area of your home, explore ways to make that area safer or avoid it altogether. Perhaps your shoes are flimsy and not supportive, and you need to invest in a more sensible pair. Also, regular cardiovascular and strength-building exercises will help you maintain muscle strength, bone density, flexibility and balance, all of which will help you stay on your feet. Read More.
